Civil Rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr., was arrested during a protest in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. In response to his arrest and a criticizing letter written to him by white religious leaders , Dr. King wrote a letter projecting his beliefs and describing his nonviolent approaches to addressing racial injustice in America. This selection is targeted towards 10th grade students and any students studying Martin Luther King.
