The Umbrella Academy Character Guide
Vanya Hargreeves is one of the forty-three children who were all born on the same day in 1989, to a mother without any previous signs of pregnancy. The baby was one of seven adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves with the intention of training them to save the world. Unlike her six adoptive siblings, Vanya seemingly has no superpowers. She had a talent for violin, and when she was an adult wrote an autobiography about her life as the ordinary member of The Umbrella Academy.
However, Vanya's life was a lie. She not only possessed powers but, ironically, was arguably the most powerful of the entire academy. Early on, Sir Reginald discovered that her emotions were linked to her ability to harness sound and convert it into energy. Despite trying to teach her to control them, he deemed Vanya's powers to be too great and destructive to ever be let out. As a result, Sir Reginald worked to cover them up and suppress them. She was placed on medication to suppress her emotional state, and Sir Reginald made her sister, Allison, convince her that she was ordinary by using her own power to subtly alter reality by lying.
Vanya learned the truth about her powers when Leonard Peabody came across Sir Reginald's journal and manipulated her to gain revenge on the Academy. After all the revelations and the way she was treated by her family, Vanya's powers became fully unleashed and, in her subsequent rampage, she incidentally triggered the apocalypse.
Five succeeds in transporting them all away before the apocalypse can kill them.Five's ability to time travel is not perfect, however, and Vanya finds herself in Dallas, Texas during 1963. Shortly after arriving, she is hit by a car by Sissy Cooper, who takes her into her home and allows her to live with her family while she is suffering amnesia from the accident.
Vanya spends numerous months on the ranch trying to figure out who she is and where she came from, and Sissy's husband, Carl Cooper, puts numerous advertisements in the newspaper to try and get answers for Vanya; they are unsuccessful, however, and nobody comes looking for Vanya.
While on the ranch, she grows closer with Sissy, and the two develop romantic feelings for one another, and eventually begin having an affair behind Carl's back. The two dream of taking Harlan away and leaving the ranch for good, but Sissy is unable to pull herself away from Carl, much to Vanya's dismay. Carl eventually finds out about the relationship and threatens to put Harlan into a home if she doesn't leave the ranch - and Sissy - behind for good.
Vanya grows increasingly close with Sissy's son, Harlan, during her time staying with the Coopers. She becomes one of the only people that Harlan will communicate with, and eventually, Harlan begins to feel the tensions between Sissy and Vanya when they argue over Carl.
Feeling unnerved by the constant arguing, Harlan runs away from the ranch when Vanya and Sissy are arguing. Vanya chases after him and finds him at the bottom of a lake having drowned minutes earlier. She uses her abilities - of which she is unable to fully control, nor knows the full extent of - to part the water and rescue Harlan. She is distraught to see that he is not breathing, but is able to bring him back by transferring her energy into Harlan's body, much to her surprise.
Vanya is unaware that she has an extensive family somewhere, and is unaware of the part she plays in the family. Luther is the first to approach Vanya, but when he finds out that she is unable to recall anything, he leaves, citing that he was returning a wallet left at the bar by Carl, however it is clear that Vanya realizes there is much more to the story.
Five is the next to find Vanya, and explains her history, but alludes to her that she triggered the apocalypse in 2019 that ended the world. This revelation drives a wedge between Five and Vanya, who believes that everything Five has told her has been a lie. When Vanya meets the rest of the Umbrella Academy, she finally realizes that she is a part of something bigger, and is forced to help Five on his attempts to avert the second apocalypse and return them to their rightful place within the timeline.
Still without her memories, however, and believed to be a Russian spy, Vanya nearly triggers a second apocalypse while being interrogated by the FBI. Ben is able to save Vanya and the Umbrella Academy prepare to face off against the Commission and to save Harlan.
After being saved herself, Vanya receives visions of Harlan struggling in pain while screaming out her name, and she realizes that she must save him before returning to 2019. She and the rest of the Umbrella Academy return to Sissy's farm, where Vanya finds Harlan experiencing strange, but familiar, outbursts of power; outbursts that have come as a result of Vanya transferring her energy to Harlan.
Vanya tries to save Harlan, but is caught off guard by an attack by the Temps Commission. She is forced to user her abilities to save her family and kills hundreds of Temps Commission agents in one blast. She returns to Harlan where she takes back the energy she had previously given him, allowing him to return back to a normal life.
Vanya and her family successfully defeat the Handler and the Commission and are able to return to their timeline.
