The Hunger Games Character Guide

Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist and narrator of The Hunger Games. She is 16 years old at the beginning of The Hunger Games, and is quiet, independent, and fierce. She has long dark hair, olive skin, and gray eyes. She lives in the coal mining region of District 12. She is named after an aquatic plant with edible underwater tubers. Katniss lives with her mother and younger sister, Primrose. Her father's death in a mining accident several years ago left her mother deeply depressed, forcing Katniss to use her hunting skills to feed her family.
When Prim is chosen by lottery as a tribute who must fight twenty-three other tributes to the death in the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She survives the game along with her co-tribute Peeta Mellark, who is in love with her. When the Gamemakers renege on a promise to let two surviving tributes from the same district live, she defies and embarrasses the government by threatening to die with Peeta, becoming the personal enemy of Panem's leader, President Snow.
In the second installment Catching Fire, Katniss and Peeta are forced to participate again in The Hunger Games, this time participating in an especially brutal edition known as the Quarter Quell, which occurs every 25 times and pits past Hunger Games winners against each other. Katniss was able to escape from the Games arena and is rescued along with a few surviving tributes by members of an underground rebellion organized by the supposedly destroyed District 13. However Peeta was not rescued, and instead captured by the Capitol.
In the third installment, Katniss becomes the Mockingjay, an inspirational symbol of a second civil war against the Capitol. Despite her limited role as a political symbol, she is drawn into combat by her obsession to kill Snow and rescue Peeta. Katniss and other rebels are able to rescue Peeta, but they discover that he has been brainwashed to hate Katniss. As the war progresses, she comes to realize the rebel leader, President Alma Coin, is as ruthless and power-driven as Snow. Katniss learns that Coin considers her expendable, and staged a Capitol atrocity that kills Prim. Coin also calls for a final Hunger Games after the war was won, using the children of the Capitol war criminals. Katniss is vehemently against this. When finally given the chance to execute Snow, Katniss kills Coin instead. She is deemed not responsible and returns to District 12, still grieving overt the loss of her sister. Peeta then returns to District 12, which helps to draw Katniss out of her depression. Katniss realizes that she is in love with him, and they marry each other. Fifteen years after their marriage, Katniss gives birth to two children.
