Axel Mortmain is the antagonist of the Infernal Devices trilogy. He is the one responsible for the clockwork creatures, who are attacking the Shadowhunters. He plots to destroy all Shadowhunters to avenge his warlock parents.
He is a very dangerous man, and he needs Tessa Gray for the last key to his plan to destory the Shadowhunters. He is killed at the end of the series by the spirit of the angel Ithuriel, who was summoned by Tessa.
