Introduction to Scientific Processes

Biotechnology is the use of cells or living organisms to develop products for humans. It includes tools such as recombinant DNA, which are DNA molecules formed by laboratory methods of genetic recombination such as molecular cloning, which bring together genetic material from multiple sources, creating sequences that would otherwise not be found in a genome. Other tools include the use of genomic libraries, DNA microarrays, expression vectors, synthetic genomics, and CRISPR gene editing.
Many of these tools have wide applications such as creating medically useful proteins, or improving plant cultivation and animal husbandry. Human insulin, for example, was the first medicine to be made using recombinant DNA technology. Other approaches such as pharming can produce large quantities of medically useful products through the use of genetically modified organisms.
